Some cosmetologists run into delays when they try to renew their licenses. How can you avoid a holdup of your license renewal?
The most common problem operators and specialists encounter when renewing their license is failure to complete the specific number of hours of Continuing Education (CE).
Cosmetology continuing education requirements are changing September 1, 2008. The required number of CE hours is reduced. Frank Denton, Chairman of the Commissioners of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation states, “The reduction in CE hours gives some needed relief to operators while keeping in place the required public health and safety training, which is of primary concern to our agency.”
The amendment to Chapter 83.25 of the Texas Administrative Code affects licenses expiring on or after September 1, 2008.
If your renewal date is approaching and you have not completed the required number of CE hours you should still file your renewal application before the expiration date. Your license renewal will not be issued until you complete the CE. If your renewal application is received prior to the due date you will not be charged a late fee even if you have not yet completed CE.

To stay on top of news important to your profession, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) encourages all barbers and cosmetologists to sign up for TDLR’s free subscription e-mail service. This is the quickest way to find out about laws, rule changes or other items of importance that can affect your license or your profession.
To sign up for this service, visit TDLR’s website at:
http://www.license.state.tx.us/newsletters/TDLRnotificationLists.asp.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) booth has gone wireless. At hair shows in the past you may have stopped by the TDLR booth to ask for information. At the next show you will be able to use a TDLR computer to go online to check your license status, your continuing education standing, update your information and even renew your license online.
TDLR employees from the Licensing division, Education and Examination division and Compliance division man the booth during the show and are available to assist you in accessing online information. Plus, they are there to answer questions you may be unable to find online.

Barber and Cosmetology Law and Rules books are also found at the TDLR booth and are available for you to purchase and take home from the show. Remember: the Cosmetology book is required by September 1, 2008, for cosmetology licensees. Barbers are encouraged to purchase the new book to keep current on industry laws and rules.
Renewing online at a hair show or from your personal computer is easy for you and helps TDLR issue your license faster. To renew online is simple: all you need is a credit card to pay the fee, your license number and the last four digits of your social security number. Feeling a little timid about applying online ask our TDLR employees to assist you at the show and the next renewal period you will be a computer star!
Updating your contact information is important and can be accomplished at the TDLR booth. We want to be able to contact you with current industry news and information regarding the status of your license. Updating your contact information at the TDLR booth, including your current e-mail address, makes communicating with you quicker and easier for both you and us.
TDLR looks forward to being a part of the hair industry shows and our staff especially looks forward to meeting and assisting you. Stop by our booth and let us help you find out what information is available online or just to say hello.
