With the onset of the cold and flu season, people are asked to take extra safety measures to protect themselves from potential illnesses. Year round, especially during this season, salon and barbershop owners and workers are not only asked, but are required to take the necessary safety measures to reduce disease and infestation from spreading to their clients and to each other.
To protect consumers, establishment and school owners are prohibited from knowingly allowing a person afflicted with a transmittable infection or parasitic infestation to serve clients or train in the establishment or school. Similarly, to protect employees, establishment and school owners are prohibited from knowingly allowing a licensee or student to work upon a person with a transmittable infection or parasitic infestation.
Infections or parasitic infestation capable of being transmitted between licensee or student and patron include, but are not limited to, the following:
Board regulations also prohibit salon and barbershop professionals from massaging a person if the skin is inflamed, broken, or where a skin infection is present. Thus, if a client has a cut or an open wound, the operator must, by law, refuse the service in order to protect themselves and other clients.
To further protect consumers, licensees must also thoroughly wash their hands with soap and water or an equally effective cleansing agent immediately before serving each client.
