The Houston Community College (HCC) Barber School celebrated its opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house on October 28, 2009. The new barbering program, located in the college’s southeast campus, welcomed 17 barber students for the Fall 2009 semester.
HCC’s barber school is the only licensed barber program currently offered by a community college in the state of Texas. “This is a place for people that are creative, self-starters and entrepreneurs,” says Hilda Sustaita, HCC Department Chair. “We strive to give great opportunities to these students. When they finish with us, they’re ready to work anywhere.”
Barbering students are eligible to take the written portion of the barbering examination when they have earned 1,000 hours of instruction. They may apply to take the practical examination once they pass the written examination and have completed a total of 1,500 hours.
“Texas community colleges have offered cosmetology instruction for many years,” states Kim Whitt, Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) Education Program Specialist. “We are pleased to welcome Houston Community College into the ranks of Texas barber schools.”
TDLR regulates and licenses all barber schools, including Houston Community College. For more information regarding barber schools or barbering education requirements contact education@license.state.tx.us.
In an effort to make your life a little easier, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) has developed and employs an online Barbering and Cosmetology license renewal procedure. According to an article on National Public Radio’s web site, www.npr.org, practically all Americans (92%) under the age of 60 say they have used a computer and 81% currently use a computer at home or work. Around a quarter of Americans over age 60 have computers at home but 69% of that group say computers are making life better.
We encourage you to take advantage of the online renewal tool but if you are still hesitant to try it here are six reasons why you should:
It’s faster. When you renew online your license prints and is mailed the next business day. If you renew online on Monday, your license is placed in the mail on Tuesday. Depending on where you live you could have your license as soon as Wednesday.
It’s convenient. You can renew at a time that fits your schedule. Whether you are a night owl, an early bird or an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. person, TDLR’s web site is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can log onto the TDLR web site and complete the information whenever you want.
Easy payment. There is no need to write a check or purchase a money order; TDLR’s online renewal accepts bank debit cards and credit cards. TDLR currently accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express credit cards.
No stress. You don’t have to find an envelope, buy a stamp and mail a letter. Simply fill out the online form, include your credit card or bank debit card number and hit the send button.
Money! Keep more of your money in your pocket. Filing online requires fewer TDLR employees to process your renewal form and fewer employees enables the Department to keep overhead low and in turn keep license fees low.
More family/friend time. If you don’t have a computer at home or work filing online enables you to either spend time with friends or family who do have a computer or gives you the perfect excuse to visit your local library.
What’s in it for TDLR? Faster service and happy licensees is what is in it for us. Remember: if you’re happy…we’re happy.
