There are many tools on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) website that can be of benefit to you. Do you want to keep up-to-date on Texas laws or rules? Are you interested in the pass rate of a particular school? Or, do you need to renew your license? The TDLR website can help you quickly and easily find answers to these questions and much more!
Subscribe to Free Email Services
TDLR offers a free subscription email service to barbers and cosmetologists. Signing up to receive emails enables the Department to keep you up-to-date on rule changes, meeting dates, enforcement cases and many other issues important to your industry. To sign up for this free service go to: www.license.state.tx.us/newsletters/TDLRnotificationLists.asp and simply check the TDLR programs you wish to receive emails for.
Renew Your License Online
It’s fast. It’s easy. You can pay the renewal fee with a bank debit card or a Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit card. Do you need more reasons?
To renew your barbering license online visit: www.license.state.tx.us/App_Online/default.asp?LicenseType=BAR&bhcp=1
To renew your cosmetology license online visit:
www.license.state.tx.us/cosmet/cosmetforms.htm#online
Email a Question to Customer Service
With your busy schedule it isn’t always easy finding time to make a phone call to our Customer Service representatives but our website is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you don’t need an immediate answer, the best way to get your question answered is by email. Usually, an email is answered within 48 hours.
If you have questions specific to your license, be sure to include your license number and the program you are seeking information about. Be as complete and detailed in your question as possible to make sure your question is answered accurately.
Email is also the most convenient way to file a change of address with TDLR. All licensees are required to notify the agency of any change in address within 30 days after a move. This helps ensure that you will receive information from the Department, including license renewal notices.

Direct your cosmetology related emails to: CS.Cosmetologists@license.state.tx.us
Check Cosmetology Student Hours Online
All cosmetology schools are required to submit monthly electronic reports that list the number of credit hours each student earned. [Using the student’s email address on-file, the Department notifies each student when their reported hours are available for viewing.**]
This website tool is available to students who want to track their progress in achieving the required program hours and correct any errors in the hours reported, if any, while the information is fresh and easily corrected.
To check the number of hours of credit you have earned, go to: www.license.state.tx.us/CosmoDataSearch.
**Send email address corrections to: CS.Cosmetologists@license.state.tx.us or fax the change to (512) 475-2871.
Compare Student Pass Rates at Schools
Would you like to see how your school measures up to other schools when it comes to graduates’ performances on the state tests? We have a tool on our website to do exactly that.
Interested individuals can compare test pass rates for a specific period of time. They can also compare student test performance by license types. For example, if you want to know how well a school prepares manicurists for the test – and for their career – you can limit your search results to manicurist test scores over a certain month, or a year.
To search test results by students at barber schools go to: www.license.state.tx.us/BarberDataSearch/. To search test results by students at cosmetology schools go to: www.license.state.tx.us/CosmoDataSearch/
If you want to check out a cosmetology or barbering school pass rate but do not know the school’s permit number, that information is available on the TDLR website. Cosmetology and Barbering schools are listed by name and permit number on the “Search Licensees by License Type” page at www.license.state.tx.us/LicenseSearch/
Answers to “Frequently Asked Questions”
Our staff receives hundreds of industry related questions every month and has compiled a list of common questions, along with the answers. If you have an industry-related question you may be able to find the answer at:

Watch and Listen to Advisory Board and Commission Meetings
Excitement was in the air in 2009 when advisory board and Texas Commission of Licensing and Regulation meetings began broadcasting live on the TDLR website. The new video system allows individuals to watch and listen from their own computer. We archive the meetings on our website which allows you to watch the proceedings at a time that is convenient for you.
To watch and listen to an advisory board or Commission meeting go to: www.license.state.tx.us/agendas.htm
As you can see, the TDLR website contains a lot of information and this is a small sample of available tools for your use. We encourage you to take an hour or two and explore the web page to see what other useful information is at your fingertips. If you have a question or need assistance we are just an email away.
