The Ohio State Board of Cosmetology recently honored Board Member, Dr. Milroy Samuel of New Albany and thanked him for his service to The Board. Dr. Samuel served as a citizen member from October, 2008 until June, 2011. As a Medical Doctor, Samuel brought an important perspective to The Board, and helped the Board craft important policy changes to enhance the education, professionalism, and reputation of the industry.
Governor John R. Kasich has appointed Mr. Thomas Taneff, also of New Albany, to replace Dr. Samuel on The Board. Mr. Taneff, a noted attorney in Central Ohio with a specialty in probate and estate planning law and adoption services, had previously served during the Administrations of Governors Bob Taft and Ted Strickland.
Taneff is a first generation American of Slavic decent whose parents came from the region of the former Yugoslavia now known as Macedonia. After receiving his B.A. in Business Administration from Ohio State in 1984, he went on to Capital University Law School where he was able to take classes at the Copenhagen University Law School in Denmark in 1986. He received his law degree from Capital in 1987. In 1997 he completed his P.I.L. from Harvard Law School.
In 1992, Taneff opened Taneff Law with an emphasis on probate law and got immersed in community volunteerism. He's been involved in almost 2,000 adoption cases, and really enjoys bringing families together and providing children good homes. He served on the Ohio Adoption Task Force and Ohio Adoption Commission, having been appointed by Gov. George V. Voinovich, and the Franklin County Children Services Adoption Task Force.
He and his wife Kimberly have two sons, Blake and Evan. He has earned numerous awards and recognitions and brings a strong depth of knowledge to State Board.
At its March Board meeting The State Board of Cosmetology voted to require all salons to post their last salon inspection report. The report needs to be posted conspicuously near the salon license in the reception area, or front part of salon. It is the hope of The board that by making the inspection report visible that the customers will be aware of salon requirements. The board is implementing this rule in keeping with the mission statement to protect and serve the public. Inspectors will be informing salons of this requirement in the coming months.
Our mission is to regulate and educate the Cosmetology Industry, with a strong emphasis on education. An educated consumer is a powerful consumer, and State Board wants consumers to know the track record of safety, sanitation, and adherence to the laws that our Legislators have passed to protect the public and integrity of the Industry.
In an effort to be of higher service to the public and the license holders who work so hard to uphold the high standards and integrity of the profession in Ohio, State Board is considering changes in its inspection and violation enforcement.
At its August Board Meeting, Members will consider a proposal to allow for Follow Up Inspections for non-licensure violations to assure adherence to state law. The Follow Up Inspection will be an opportunity for any salon or license holder to correct a violation within thirty days of issuance of the violation.
Additionally, The Board will consider adding Continuing Education hours for some types of violations so that license holders can brush up on state law, and how it serves to protect both them and the public. More on this proposal in the next edition of the Ohio Stylist.
