On February 8, 2016, Mrs. Glenda Jemison, stepped down from the Advisory Board on Cosmetology after serving as a board member since October 31, 2005. Mrs. Jemison served as Presiding Officer of the Board from October 19, 2013 until February 8, 2016.
In 1969 Mrs. Jemison married Ronald Jemison and became a member of the Jemison family, owners of one of the oldest beauty schools in the United States, Franklin Beauty School, in Houston, Texas. With family encouragement Mrs. Jemison earned her Cosmetology Operator's license in 1971 and her cosmetology instructor's license in 1986.
Mrs. Jemison, also known to past and present students a "Ms. J," became a national television star on the Oprah Winfrey Network hit show, Houston Beauty, a reality television series that aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network in 2013. It chronicled the lives of Glenda "Ms. J" Jemison, owner and director of Franklin Beauty School, and also encompassed the lives of some of her students.
It was with great pleasure that the Advisory Board on Cosmetology and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation recognized the significant professional achievements of Glenda Jemison, and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the invaluable contributions she made to the State of Texas, the Texas Advisory Board on Cosmetology and the Texas cosmetology industry.
On Feb. 8, 2016, the Advisory Board on Cosmetology paid tribute to Vogue College's, Jessica Saavedra. Jessica's parents, husband and sons, as well as Vogue College representatives, were present to receive the honorary certificate on Jessica's behalf.
Jessica passed away on December 24, 2015, but her memory will live on at Vogue College when the student lounge is renamed in her honor. At the time of her death Jessica had completed 908 hours, and held an 88% GPA. She expected to graduate in July 2016, but was allowed to participate in the 2015 graduation ceremony.
Here is what Mary Kochel, Vogue College School Director, wrote about Jessica:
"Jessica was the kind of student we at Vogue love to have—a student who always had a smile and kind word for everyone she met. Her dedication to her career, here at Vogue, and passion for this industry were inspiring. Even on her worse days you would find her working with clients or on her mannequin, and never complaining about anything. She never refused a client, always participated in extracurricular activities and was eager to learn.
She embarked in this field because it was something she wanted to do since being a little girl, and she wanted to provide a better life for her family. Cosmetology offered the opportunity to do what she loved most and secure a strong future for her two sons, whom she always said were her driving force. Jessica was always so thankful for all she learned here at Vogue, but in reality she became somewhat of our teacher for through her perseverance and tenacity we learned that one must never quit, and always smile, even during the worse moments.
It is said that the heart never forgets, Jessica Saavedra was truly that kind of person!" The thoughts and prayers of the employees of TDLR are with Jessica's family, friends, and school mates.
