NH2 salon in Novato California has partnered with non-profit Matter of Trust to help contain the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Matter of Trust collects hair snippings from salons nationally. Clean hair (free from oils) is wound into nylon stockings called "booms" that are used to soak up oil spills. A boom will absorb one quart of oil in a minute.
"Every time I turn on the news, I wonder, what can I do?" asked Nicole Hitchcock, CFO of NH2 salon. After doing some research, she discovered a national non-profit that supported exactly what she could do. "My staff collects the hair we cut and I send it to Matter of Trust." says Hitchcock, whose 4000 square foot salon in Novato cuts a lot of hair. NH2 is collecting, on average, 6 pounds of hair per week for Matter of Trust. Nicole suggests anyone wanting to get involved in helping contain the oil spill do one of two things:
1. Get a haircut at a Matter of Trust partnered salon
or
2. Ask for stylist for your haircut clippings and drop them off at N H 2 salon.
